Being a parent while caring at home for your own parent can be difficult and stressful. As a caregiver, you may find yourself tired and out-of-sorts with little patience for your daily routine. You may also find that you are forgetful because your mind is overwhelmed with things to do. To help you get through this time of year and reduce your daily stress, here are some helpful tips.
Back to School Tips
1. Plan Ahead
Don't wait until the last minute to get ready for the school year. Take some time when things are quiet to plan ahead. This will make things less confusing and stressful for everyone involved.
2. Write Things Down
Writing things down relieves your memory of unnecessary information. Make clear lists of what you need to buy and what actions you need to take with deadlines for each one.
3. Keep Information in One Place
It is a good idea to keep all your paperwork and notes together in one place. In fact, having a small accordian file folder to keep papers and notes will keep them organized and clean until you need them.
4. Plan Short Bursts of Time to Accomplish Tasks
Plan periods of 30 minutes to 1 hour to get tasks done while your senior is sleeping or occupied. Potentially, you can take them shopping with you. If not, ask friends and relatives to take your place as caregiver while you take your children shopping to get ready for school.
5. Be Realistic
Don't become upset if everything doesn't go according to plan. Life happens when it happens and you need to be realistic with the results. To help with this issue, you can plan extra time to get things done. That way if they take longer than expected, you will still complete your list.
6. Plan Rewards
Once you finish a task, plan rewards for yourself and your family. These can be games, food or extra TV time, but you all deserve them for finishing what you need to do.
